A tale of two companies:
Waltco originated in Gardena, California, in 1954 as a division of Waltco Engineering. A manufacturer of parts for the aerospace industry, Waltco Engineering entered the liftgate manufacturing business at the request of one of its major customers – the U.S. Department of Defense. Since 1989 the corporate headquarters has been located in Tallmadge, Ohio, also the site of its manufacturing operations.
Soon the company grew to also supply liftgates to a wide range of customers, including major leasing companies such as Ryder and Hertz. By the mid 1980s Waltco had become one of the largest manufacturers of hydraulic liftgates in the United States.
Waltco made a name for itself by offering strong product designs and by designing and building a broad line of flipaway, hybrid slider/flipaway and railgate products backed by the best customer service team in the industry. Waltco was purchased by Zepro Tail Lifts in 1986. Zepro Tail Lifts is part of the Hiab load handling division of Cargotec Corporation based in Finland with U.S. headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Ultron Lift Corp, formerly DEL Liftgates was founded by Jack Martin in 1945 as a division of DEL Hydraulics in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It included a manufacturing and sales operation in the U.K. Purchased by Militello Holdings in 2000, it moved its corporate offices and North American manufacturing operations to Buffalo, New York.
Ultron Lift Corp dominated the Canadian market with its innovative products and successfully introduced and sold the DV series of hydraulic liftgates, featuring series hydraulic design, a lifetime warranty on slide pads and the lowest cost of ownership of any railgate on the market. Ultron medium duty and heavy duty railgates were sold in the U.S. under a private label agreement and were widely accepted. Ultron’s full line of railgate products, from pickup truck applications to heavy duty hydraulic railgates, are recognized as industry leading designs and form the backbone of the newly combined railgate product offerings from the new Waltco. Two companies – Together. Stronger.
